A null model for explain crustacean zooplankton species associations in central and southern patagonian in land waters OceanDocs

Amorphous silica biomineralizations in Schoenoplectus californicus (Cyperaceae): their relation with maturation stage and silica availability Boletín de la Sociedad
Fernández Honaine,Mariana; Borrelli,Natalia L; Osterrieth,Margarita; Del Rio,Luis.
The factors involved on the silicifcation process in Cyperaceae are scarcely known. In this study we analyse the effect of maturation stage and silica availability on the production of amorphous silica biomineralizations in culms of Schoenoplectus californicus. Young and senescent culms were collected from ponds with different silica availability. Two complementary methodologies (calcination and staining techniques), light and scanning electron microscopy and EDS were applied for amorphous silica analyses in plants. Quantitative data were analysed by Kruskal-Wallis and a two-way ANOVA tests. There were no signifcant differences between silica content of culms collected in ponds with different silica availability. Instead, silica content in senescent culms...

Can nesting waterbirds influence the community structure of macroinvertebrates in southern Brazilian intermittent wetlands? Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Zardo,Daniela C.; Souza,Marcela M.; Pires,Mateus M.; Stenert,Cristina; Maltchik,Leonardo.
ABSTRACT The main goal of this study was to test the effect of the presence of nesting waterbirds on the taxonomic structure (richness, abundance and composition) of macroinvertebrate communities in southern Brazilian wetlands. Macroinvertebrate communities were seasonally sampled in eight intermittent wetlands differing according to the occurrence of nesting colonies of waterbirds (four with the presence of rookeries; four without). The influence of nutrients and water and sediment physicochemical variables on macroinvertebrate communities was also assessed. The community structure of aquatic macroinvertebrates was not affected by the presence of colonies of nesting waterbirds. Rather, macroinvertebrate communities varied seasonally and they were...

Costil, F.
24 Species of Gastropoda, representing 3357 specimens, have been sampled in 57 varied ponds of Brittany (France). The most frequent species (at least in 10% of the samples) are considered according to their average abundance and dominance. The average specific richness of the ponds where the species have been collected is studied. In a second stage, the Gastropoda are analysed by means of a principal component analysis. The 1-2 plane correspond to 87% of the whole variance. This analysis associated with a cluster analysis led to the partition of 5 groups of species.

Inventory of water storage types in the Blue Nile and Volta River Basins AgEcon
Johnston, Robyn M.; McCartney, Matthew P..
For agriculture there is a continuum of water storage options, ranging from groundwater aquifers, soil water, natural wetlands and small ponds and tanks to large reservoirs. In any situation each of these has its own niche in terms of technical feasibility, socioeconomic sustainability and impact on public health and the environment. Planning storage requires insight into impending needs and also a good understanding of what already exists and what was, and was not, successful, in the past. This report provides an inventory of existing and prospective water storage in the Ghanaian Volta and the Ethiopian Blue Nile basins. It provides as much quantitative data as possible, but highlights both the dearth of readily available information and the lack of...

Performance and economic indicators of a large scale fish farming in Mato Grosso, Brazil R. Bras. Zootec.
Barros,Adriana Fernandes de; Martins,Maria Inez Espagnoli Geraldo.
Performance and economic indicators of a large scale fish farm that produces round fish, located in Mato Grosso State, Brazil, were evaluated. The 130.8 ha-water surface area was distributed in 30 ponds. Average total production costs and the following economic indicators were calculated: gross income (GI), gross margin (GM), gross margin index (GMI), profitability index (PI) and profit (P) for the farm as a whole and for ten ponds individually. Production performance indicators were also obtained, such as: production cycle (PC), apparent feed conversion (FC), average biomass storage (ABS), survival index (SI) and final average weight (FAW). The average costs to produce an average 2.971 kg.ha-1 per year were: R$ 2.43, R$ 0.72 and R$ 3.15 as average...
